HasNa 2017

Yiannis was one of the 32 Turkish and Greek speaking Cypriots who are credited for "planting the seeds" of the Cyprus peace movement in the early 90s, having introduced thousands in conflict resolution and structured dialogue; a group that became known as "Cyprus Conflict Resolution Trainers Group." In 1996, he pioneered in using technology to "break" the communication wall and support peace builders coordinate and plan their activities, a project that evolved into a portal with UN funding in 2000-2003 and became known as Tech4Peace. HasNa Inc. supported several of Yianni's visions and projects, including a "Young Journalists" Project (2002/), the "Reconciliation Now!" initiative (2003), the "Talk of the Island" (2005) and the "Towards a New Media Landscape" (2007). Overall, these projects reached and empowered thousands of Cypriots. His early years' experiences were documented in his "Masks of Demons" book. In the years following the negative outcome of the 2004 referendum, Yiannis and his team launched the "Civil Society Dialogue project in Cyprus" and provided opportunities for active citizens on both sides to discuss and scientifically analyze the negative outcome. His work has been published in several peered reviewed publications, equipping scientists and analysts with validated data and evidence.

He has a medical degree (score 1.5-very good) from Leipzig University (Germany), a PhD in Neurophysiology with summa cum laude from Karl-Ludwig Institute (Leipzig) and an MS in Systems and Industrial Engineering (GPA 4.0) from the University of Arizona. In his early career he conducted research in neuro-motor control using applied digital signal processing in time and frequency domains to analyse single-unit recordings from experimental animals. Research in special needs, solutions that profile and enhance cognitive abilities, and the neuroscience of learning; this research led to the GNOUS startup. Medical graduate of the Leipzig University, Germany, completed a PhD in Neurophysiology at the Karl-Ludwig Institute (Leipzig) and an MS in Systems and Industrial Engineering at the University of Arizona. He represented Cyprus in several pan-European networks and research projects related to special needs and solutions enhancing cognitive abilities, including, COST219ter: Accessibility for all to services and terminals for next generation mobile networks, COST2102: Cross-Modal Analysis of Verbal and Non-verbal Communication, and CARDIAC: Advancing Research & Development in the area of Accessible & Assistive ICT. He was the lead developer of MAPS-Mental Attributes Profiling System, a language independent cognitive abilities profiling system capable of predicting weaknesses as well as equipping experts with a profile of mental abilities so as to design personalized remediation programs.

Laouris is also a social and business entrepreneur, member of the Board of the Institute of 21st Century Agoras, and Director of CYBERETHICS: Cyprus Safer Internet Center. He was also the co-Founder of numerous peace promoting projects such as tech4peace.org, Youth Promoting Peace (y2p.org), EUcitizenship.net MulticulturalCyprus.net, TalkOfTheIsland.org, civilsocietydialogue.net, ActBeyondBorders.net, etc. His books MasksofDemons.com and CitizensCommandments.com are most relevant. His contributions in systems science applications were recognized by the Hellenic Society for Systemic Studies who honored him with their 2008 Award.
