Description

On February 7th, Safer Internet Day 2012, the Cyprus Safer Internet Center organized a conference in Nicosia to celebrate the day. The SID conference gathered more than 700 students, teachers and parents with presentations from experts and panel discussions from experts and youth representatives.

Program

The conference was under the auspices of the Ministry of Education & Culture. There was a welcoming message from a representative of the Ministry of Education & Culture and from Mr. Aleco Alexandrou (Head of Internet Services, CYTA). First presenter at this event was Mr. Stavros Kondaktzis, Chief Strategist from Avacom Media that talked about the Social Media as a personal case. Second presenter was Mrs. Magdalini Zafiropoulou, Electronic Mechanic member of the EEXI that talked about Social Media and personal data protection. Mrs. Fotini Mavromati, Consultant/Psychologist for the P&A Kyriakou Children’s Hospital followed and talked about teenagers and the Internet: research and experiences from the Teenage Health program. Following Mrs. Mavromati, was Mrs. Anastasia Economou (Head of the Department of Educational Technology of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute) that presented the top 10 videos chosen from the SID 2012 Cyprus Video Competition. At the end of the presentation of the 10 videos the top 3 winning videos were awarded the preannounced gift (an i-pad per participating winning student), offered by CYTA! After the presentations a discussion between the students, parents, authorities, experts and members of the audience was held, coordinated by Dr. Yiannis Laouris. The discussion turned out to be very interesting and productive. During the discussion phase Mr. George Karkas, (Cyber Crime Unit of the Cyprus Police) and Mrs. Iliada Spyrou, (Helpline Coordinator) presented the ways people in Cyprus that have problems on the Internet, can get help.
